Linking Majors to Careers
Many students assume that there is a direct link between the major they study and the career they get. Students often ask, “What jobs am I qualified for with my major?” This question does not have a simple answer because frequently there is not a direct link between major and job. You will discover that often there are people with a variety of majors doing well in the same occupation. Or that people with the same major are doing well in a variety of work settings
However, there can be a relationship between what people like about their majors and what type of activities and skills are required for occupations. For instance, English majors often enjoy and have skills in writing, editing, reading, researching and being creative. Some types of occupations directly involve similar types of activities and desire these skills. Therefore, English majors may be attracted to those types of positions. This does not mean they are limited to these positions or that by being an English major they are automatically qualified for these positions. It means that the interests and skills that are associated with an English major are also associated with this type of job. This association can provide a place from which to begin to explore. The following web sites list several majors and occupations associated with them.
