ROBERT P. LARSEN GRANT for RESEARCH in CAREER DEVELOPMENT (2008)
Award Purpose
The Robert P. Larsen Grant for Research in Career Development was created in memory of Bob Larsen, the first career counselor at the University of Illinois, to recognize his life-long commitment to and support of career counseling. The Career Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign awards this grant to support research that addresses topics relevant to the field of career development and that will increase knowledge related to career and vocational issues.
Award
The Robert P. Larsen Grant for Research in Career Development awards up to three grants per year. Maximum individual awards will be $1500 per year. Lesser amounts may be awarded.
Eligibility
Currently enrolled graduate students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in good academic standing in Masters or Doctoral programs are eligible. Both qualitative and quantitative research proposals will be considered.
Application Procedure
For full consideration, each applicant should provide all of the following:
1) A cover page containing the title of the research and the applicant’s name, university identification number (UIN) and contact information (address, department, university mail code, telephone number, fax number, and email), and advisor’s name and contact information.
2) A brief, but complete, description of the research, not to exceed four double-spaced pages, written for the non-specialist reader, which clearly states:- a) The research problem and rationale
- b) Relevance to the field of career development
- c) How this research adds to the knowledge in the field and addresses under-researched questions or issues
- d) Description of the nature and methods of the research project
3) One-year project timeline.
4) Proposed budget indicating how the grant funds would be used directly for research expenses and rationale for the expenditures. (Note: Conference travel to present research will not be funded by this grant.)
5) A current transcript. (Unofficial copies are acceptable.)
6) A letter of support that evaluates the research project, speaks to the project’s significance, and endorses the proposed budget. A faculty member, thesis or project advisor, or department head may write this letter.
7) A statement regarding the status of the Institutional Review Board approval process related to this research project.
8) Signed “Consent to Release” form (see link at bottom of page).
Requirements of recipients:
1) Within one year of receipt of the award, recipients will submit a written report to the grant coordinator at The Career Center.
2) The following spring, recipients will present their research findings to the University of Illinois community in a forum facilitated by The Career Center for Larsen grant recipients.
3) All publications derived from research funded by the Robert P. Larsen Grant will acknowledge support.
4) Recipients are encouraged to present findings of this research at professional organizations and to submit findings for publication.
Review Procedures
All complete applications received by Monday, February 11, 2008 will be reviewed. Proposals will be reviewed by a committee and carefully evaluated based on the information submitted by the applicant. Award recipient(s) will be notified by March 31, 2008.
