Position Description
Dentistry (www.adea.org) is a branch of medicine specifically devoted to the maintenance, prevention, and treatment of the teeth, gums, and additional aspects of the oral cavity.
Although a large majority of dentists are in General Practice many will pursue an area of specialization after completing the four years of dental school. The training in a specialization usually requires one (1) to four (4) years and can be in the one of the following areas: public health, endodontics, oral pathology, oral surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics.
Education and Training
You will complete your four year degree at one of the fifty-five (55) dental schools in the United States. Upon completion of your training you will be awarded a D.M.D (Doctor of Dental Medicine) or a D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery). The two degrees are equivalent and are awarded upon completion of the same types of program.
