Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Position Description

Emergency Medical Technicians treat patients in all types of emergency situations from car accidents to heart attacks. EMT's stabilize and transport patients to hospitals. They usually work together with firefighters and police officers.

Education and Training (specific to the State of Illinois)

Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B)
These providers must complete an approved 110 hour course. Students are trained and licensed to administer external defibrillation. However, the main objective of the course is to teach students how to quickly transport patients to hospitals.
Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate (EMT-I)
These providers must complete an additional 75-hour course in the use of intravenous fluids, intubation of a patient and cardiac defibrillation.
Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P)
This is the highest level of licensure. EMT-P's must complete 400 hours of instruction in administration of medications, cardiac defibrillation, intravenous administration, and advanced airway management techniques. (source: Illinois Emergency Medical Services )
