Nursing

Position Description

Nursing is a career of caring and compassion that combines high tech with high touch. In the study of nursing you will learn the many aspects of patient care, use of new technologies, management strategies and strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Nurses work in a variety of health care settings, and are not only partners with physicians and health care personnel, but are strong advocates for their patients. As the population ages and lives longer and continuous advances in health care technology develop, the need for nurses will continue to be in demand. The job market is bright for a nursing degree.

Programs in Illinois

With over 1500 nursing programs, you can acquire the type of nursing degree that meets your long term goals within the field:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
UIUC does not have a Nursing program, but UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago) offers a Nursing program on our campus. Students can apply to UIUC and come in as undecided, take required course work, then apply to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program. RN is not a degree. It's a license. Whether you choose to pursue a BSN (four years) or an Associate's degree (2 years--usually at a community college), you would still take the licensing exam to become a registered nurse (RN).
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
A two-year program offered at many community and junior colleges. Some hospital schools of nursing and universities offer ADN degrees.
Hospital Diploma
A two- or three-year program based in hospital settings. Many diploma schools are affiliated with junior colleges where students take basic science and English requirements.
We are a department in the Division of Student Affairs on campus. We are one of over twenty Career Services offices on campus.
