Position Description
A Doctor of Optometry, O.D., (www.opted.org) serves as a primary health provider who will diagnose and treat conditions and diseases of the human eye.
As an optometrist, you will perform examinations of the internal and external structures of the eye, evaluate patient’s vision, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, and analyze test results to help co-manage patient care. Specialization by optometrists can focus on practices in sports vision, pediatric care, low vision, binocular care, as well as general clinic.
Education and Training
After you have completed your four year degree in optometry school you must be state licensed through a clinical and written exam. For students in the state, the Illinois College of Optometry of Chicago is both the profession’s oldest and largest optometry institution.
